...is Glass Teletype about?
-
Self-described as "junk shop synth pop", Glass Teletype is primarily music-related, accompanied
with visuals and physical presence. Homemade audiovisual equipment alongside second-hand/third-hand
synthesisers are involved to create new visuals and sounds. Songs by Glass Teletype range from the
plague to being at Camberwell Market on the day Tom Verlaine died. Visuals focus on low fidelity,
circuit-bending, and video synthesis. Besides gigs, house parties, open mics, collaborations, and
spontaneous synthesiser jamming, physical releases have yet to surface...

...is a glass teletype?

While there is no academic documentation on how to actually
teletype glass, an outdated computing term exists for a
glass teletype. Retroactively, such machines are now known as
dumb terminals. These are similar to traditional teletypes, however,
the output is displayed on a cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitor instead of
being printed onto paper, hence the glass in the name. They are
dumb to differentiate from so-called smart terminals,
which add features and amenities beyond the capabilities of both the
original teletype and the glass teletype. Such abilities include
graphics modes other than text...

...is some of the equipment used in Glass Teletype's music?
-
During gigs, the audio equipment for Glass Teletype only consists of a
Yamaha QY700,
which performs 'backup track' duties with floppy disks, and a
Korg Wavestate
that is played with live. This is also the crux of Glass Teletype recordings.
To aid with the effort of compulsive home recording, several other synthesisers
are utilised for overdubbing purposes. Among other things, these include a
Roland Alpha Juno 2,
a Yamaha DX7s, and a
circuit-bent Behringer TD-3. Recently, a homemade
synthesiser has been incorporated into the live set to augment the music, operated using a MIDI
controller. Despite the focus on synthesis, though, guitars and guitar pedals are used in some
Glass Teletype recordings, albeit sparingly...

Glass Teletype is located in "Melbourne," "Victoria," "Australia,"
